Highfields Community to have a say on new High School
Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek today announced the start of community consultation for a new state high school at Highfields.
Minister Langbroek toured the proposed site at Polzin Road with Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington and Member for Toowoomba North Trevor Watts who has fought hard for the new school.
“The Newman Government is committed to providing this new school for the growing Highfields area to the north of Toowoomba by the start of the 2015 school year,” Mr Langbroek said.
“Community consultation is a chance for the government to gauge public opinion on a number of infrastructure opportunities associated with the new development.
“The first public meeting will be held at Highfields State School on 1 August.
“Planning for the $35 million Stage 1, including community consultation, is due to be completed by November this year.
“Following design and Ministerial designation, construction is scheduled to start in early 2014 for the school to be ready to open its doors in January 2015.”
Mr Langbroek said based on current forecasts the new Highfields State High School’s first intake would be around 230 students comprising approximately 150 in Year 7 and 80 in Year 8.
Stage 1 is expected to include an information services centre, canteen, hospitality services and food court, executive and student services centre, junior secondary applied technology centre, science centre, general learning centre and covered area. A sports oval, play areas and platforms for future multi-purpose courts will also be included.
Further stages will be planned to support future population growth and the addition of Years 9 to 12.
