2012 QPS State of Origin car launched
Police Minister Jack Dempsey and Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson launched the 2012 QPS State of Origin car at Suncorp Stadium today, ahead of the third game on July 4.
The vehicle was designed specifically for the State of Origin to promote both the Queensland Police Service and Queensland Rugby League.
Minister Dempsey said the Queenslander Police Car was a great way for the Police Service to show support for the team and also get involved in the community.
“The State of Origin brings Queenslanders from all walks of life together to show their state pride and the vehicle helps celebrate that,” Mr Dempsey said.
“There was a great outcome with the 2011 QPS State of Origin car, prompting us to bring the concept back for the 2012 State of Origin Series.
“Last year’s bonnet was auctioned after the last State of Origin fixture and raised $7,209 for the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation.
“This year the money will go towards the Po lice Citizen’s Youth Club to provide the resources needed to help our youth.”
Commissioner Atkinson said the bonnet of the vehicle will be signed by the 2012 Queensland State of Origin team before being removed following the third game and donated to the Police-Citizens Youth Clubs (PCYC) for charity auction.
“PCYC’s do a fantastic job and have been a part of our community for nearly 65 years,” Commissioner Atkinson said.
“Their work has had a positive impact on the lives of many young Queenslanders, helping them get their lives back on the right track.”
The bonnet of the Queenslander Police Car will be auctioned as part of the PCYC Gala Dinner later in 2012, and the QPS also plan to release a limited number of prints of the vehicle that will be donated to different charitable organisations.
Mr Dempsey said the car would be used to escort the Queensland team from its hotel to Suncorp Stadium for the final game of the series.
“T he vehicle will patrol the streets around Suncorp Stadium, including Caxton Street and the Brisbane Central Business District, as fans arrive to watch the game,” he said.
“It may also be used at other community events, festivals, or with promotions for the QPS verses NSW Police Rugby League Games.
“The vehicle provides an opportunity for the QPS to positively engage with the community while raising money for a good cause.”
