Jazz legend James Morrison to help budding performers
Sixteen of Queensland’s most talented state school student musicians are trumpeting their skills after being selected to star onstage with jazz legend James Morrison in this year’s Creative Generation – State Schools Onstage.
Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said students from around Queensland would take part in a two-day workshop on Thursday 21 and Friday 22 June with the internationally acclaimed musician and Queensland Music Festival Artistic Director before performing in the show.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these talented students to practise and sharpen their skills under the tutorship of one of the world’s best known jazz musicians,” Mr Langbroek said.
“It will be the first time the students get to play with James before they take to the stage together in four weeks’ time as The James Morrison Creative Generation Big Band.
“Teachers will also benefit, with James Morrison conducting a professional development sess ion for educators during the workshop.”
The workshop will be held at Cleveland District State High School. The students will then go on to perform as part of Creative Generation on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 July 2012 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
As well as The James Morrison Creative Generation Big Band, the show will feature more than 1500 students from ages five to 18 including a 600-voice choir, 600 dancers, 30 featured soloists and a 65-piece symphony orchestra.
Creative Generation – State Schools Onstage 2012 is presented by the Department of Education, Training and Employment, is sponsored by Queensland University of Technology and QSuper and supported by media partners The Courier-Mail, Network Ten and 97.3FM.

James Morrison will be at Cleveland District State High School, Russell Street, Cleveland, on Thursday 21 June from 9.30am-11.30am and Friday 22 June from 9.30am-2pm.
