Compensation deadline must be extended for Mackay mothers

The LNP is calling on the Palaszczuk Government to extend the compensation deadline today and give victims of Mackay Hospital the justice they deserve.

Leader of the Opposition David Crisafulli said many of the women who suffered enormous trauma from the catastrophic failings at the hospital would not be aware of their rights until the findings were released on Friday.

“It is unacceptable for these women to be given a deadline to apply for compensation the day the findings were handed down,” he said.

“There is no reason this can’t be extended today.

“The findings in this report are serious.

“These catastrophic failings have impacted so many women in Mackay and every single one of them deserves justice.”

Deputy Leader of the Opposition Jarrod Bleijie said the lives of so many Mackay mothers and their families had been changed forever.

“In a further insult to these mothers, today we learn the Premier hasn’t even read the report,” he said.

“Three babies died, and numerous women suffered life-altering complications from surgeries at the hospital.

“The Premier, her Health Minister and the government knew what was happening at the hospital’s obstetrics and gynaecology department and they did nothing.

“The Palaszczuk Government has had the damning report for a month, and yet the Premier still hasn’t read it.

“How can these Mackay women have faith the government is looking after them when the Premier can’t even be bothered to read the report?

“Queenslanders deserve better.”
