Labor must release secret mine safety report

Wednesday 2 September, 2020

The LNP is demanding the Palaszczuk Labor Government release its report on the Grosvenor mine explosion and safety in Queensland’s resources industry.

Labor’s Mines Minister received the interim report from Queensland’s Coal Mining Board of Inquiry on Monday, August 31.

LNP Shadow Mines Minister Dale Last said he believed all Queenslanders, especially resources communities and workers, deserved to know the report’s contents.

“The LNP firmly believes that Queenslanders deserve to know what’s in the report before the October 31 election.

“While the Palaszczuk Labor Government continues to dither on mine safety in Queensland, eight lives have been lost in the past two years.

“Labor’s record on mine safety is dire and dangerous.

“The failure to monitor and regulate operations at Grosvenor mine shows there are serious institutional problems within the inspectorate.

“The LNP supports the need for a Board of Inquiry, but believes the terms of reference should be expanded to include the role of the inspectorate, with public hearings a mandatory requirement.

“Workers, industry groups and the community all deserve to have their say in an open and transparent process.

“The LNP has repeatedly called for a full bipartisan Parliamentary inquiry into safety in the resources industry as this is only way that the community, industry and workers can have their say on what is really going on.”
